Trained Safe Harbour-certified locations are equipped with the knowledge to better understand the needs of their diverse workforce and improve their service to diverse customers and clients. You can locate Safe Harbours in Edmonton, Calgary, Brooks, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, Innisfail, Olds & District, Trochu, Rocky Mountain House, Caroline, Acme, Blackfalds, Carbon, Linden, and Three Hills in Central Alberta.

17 locations of the Edmonton Public Library, the Pride Centre of Edmonton, the City of Red Deer, Grande Prairie Regional College, Caroline and Blackfalds Neighbourhood Place, the Canadian Tire in Fort McMurray, the Innisfail Chamber of Commerce, Benjamin Moore, the Colour Experts, Ten Thousand Villages, the Mountaineer Publishing Company, and the Canadian Red Cross are a sample of our proud diversity champions in Alberta. They are leaders in their commitment to providing an inclusive workplace environment and promoting diversity in their communities by following these three simple principles:

Bullet Equitable Treatment: A commitment to treating all of clients and/or customers in an equitable manner. If a concern is expressed regarding a lack of equitable treatment, employers and staff take this concern seriously and take steps to address it.

Bullet A Helping Hand: Providing a temporary and immediate safe place for a community member who has faced discrimination in or near our worksite.*

BulletPrepared Employees and Worksites: Preparing all of staff to develop a shared understanding of diversity and equitable treatment; to encourage a respectful and inclusive work environment; and to respond to those who need a helping hand.

*A Safe Harbour helping hand may include offering a place to sit, a glass of water, a phone to use, and information to help them seek further assistance. It is recommended that you have a plan for employees to respond to people who need a helping hand. Each Safe Harbour displays the colourful window decal, a certificate, and other signage that proudly announces to their community that their management and staff welcome and support newcomers, visible minorities, people with disabilities, youth, seniors, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-Spirited, queer community, and other diverse community members.

Safe Harbour-certified locations are encouraged to model diversity by promoting the three Safe Harbour commitments to their customers/clients, community members, and neighbouring storefronts. By discussing these commitments openly, managers and staff in Safe Harbour-certified locations know what immediate steps to take to offer safe refuge to someone facing discrimination as well as to respond to discriminatory remarks and actions within the workplace when they occur.
